Who are the New Mystics Theatre Company?
A recent interview with Artistic Director/Resident Playwright Joey Madia.
To use the performing arts, literary, and visual arts as a means of engaging young people, faculty, families, and communities in explorations of cultural and social issues affecting our lives.
To use the Artistic Director’s 18 years of professional experience as theatre teacher, director, playwright, and actor to maintain a Theatre Company composed of teen and young adult performers that will engage young people, families, and communities in education, discussion, and collaboration focusing on cultural and social issues including, but not limited to: violence in all its forms, bullying, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, and racism/cultural intolerance.
The Artistic Director, in collaboration with the Artistic Staff and Company members, will create original performance pieces by using both established and his own cutting-edge techniques in brainstorming, improvisation, and playwriting in a workshop setting. Using a variety of theatre techniques both new and old, New Mystics Theatre Company will create plays and programs that help students increase their self-esteem and team-building, problem-solving, and communication skills so that they can visualize and actualize successful and socially healthy lives. Because young people are involved from the very beginning of brainstorming all the way through the performance or other public presentation, the theatre pieces that are presented will be engaging and relevant to the audience they are trying to reach. The pieces can also be customized to fit the specific needs of schools, human service providers, and religious and other community organizations in developing solutions to social problems important to them.
